Please join us this Friday 5th June at 2pm for a musical performance by Alkanna Graeca accompanied by readings from Carolina Aguirre in response to her exhibition ‘It murmurs’ for London Gallery Weekend. No RSVP is necessary.
Alkanna Graeca is a vocal trio that reimagines polyphonic traditions from across the Balkans. Formed by Dunja Botic, Alexandra Achillea, and Irini Arabatzi, they channel the heritage of their homelands into a ritualistic exploration of voice - songs carrying mountain echoes, stripped bare, reshaped, and reborn, blurring past and present. Alongside the trio, Carolina will read from her creative writing and research, sharing texts that have informed the exhibition.
It murmurs, Aguirre’s first solo exhibition at Palmer Gallery, is an immersive installation of sculpture, painting, film, and audio. By tuning into the rhythms of death and renewal, It murmurs offers a meditation on presence and resilience. Natural materials like calcium carbonate, shellac, charcoal, and sumi ink create a mineralised environment that contrasts with sharp backlit panels and the minimalist aesthetics of Aguirre’s video work. Painted surfaces carry echoes of silt and smoke. Softly emerging and dissolving into these planes are traces of bodies and code. Marked through instinctive, performative gestures, these imprints are porous, fleeting, and expansive, morphing over time. The works have a visceral, hazy quality, evoking deep time, transformation and a return to nature.
This performance coincides with the launch of Lisson Grove Galleries, a collaborative group of non-profit and commercial arts spaces in the Lisson Grove area of London. Palmer Gallery, Lisson Gallery, The Bomb Factory, Patrick Heide Contemporary Art, and The Showroom are coming together with the shared aim of celebrating and foregrounding the diverse and distinctive culture of Lisson Grove and its longstanding cultural presence within the city.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen and support ongoing artistic activity – both emerging and established - across the multiple spaces, and to provide unique experiences to allow a deeper engagement with audiences both local and city-wide. The collective will programme a coordinated series of inclusive events throughout the year, ranging from artist talks and curator-led tours, to breakfasts, BBQs and late openings.
